IT’S THE BIGGEST!
Surely the ultimate homage to Bacchus is
the Milestii Mici in Moldova. This underground
wine city boasts more than two million bottles of vino.
Acres of aisles of wax-sealed bottles are a disorienting
maze in the cool, arched-vault chambers, but maps are
everywhere, even on the bottles themselves. The architecture
of the “Golden Collection” here is modeled for
ancient Greek temples with new gallery “houses”
opening each year. The wines have only been stored here
since 1969 and represent a multitude of grapes and varietals:
Pinot, Traminer, Muscat, Riesling, Feteasca, Dnestrovscoie,
Milestcoie, Codru, Negru de Purcari, Trandarfirul Moldovei,
Auriu, Cahor-Ciumai, and others, all made according to
Moldovan tradition. After you work up a thirst exploring,
enjoy tasty meals of local specialty foods in the tasting
halls, which boast mosaic fish ponds, stained glass, and
