Philadelphia GayFest!

August gets very gay in Philadelphia with the debut of GayFest!, a new GLBT theater festival presented by Quince Productions. With four plays running in repertory and a staged reading of a new gay play, the event promises to make the tiny Shubin Theatre a hotbed of gayness. The shows are as diverse as the GLBT community itself: "The Last Sunday in June" brings a group of New York gay men together to watch the Pride Parade, resulting in much comedy and a few lessons about the nature of community; "Devil Boys from Beyond" presents a Rosalind Russell meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers fantasia that pits some hard-boiled New York reporters against a couple of hunky gay aliens; "Slipping" explores the world of gay teens in a haunting, poetic, and comic way; and "The Beebo Brinker Chronicles," based on lesbian pulp fiction novels of the 1950s and 60s, reaches through the period-inspired hilarity to some truths about pre-Stonewall life in Greenwich Village. In addition, there will be a one-night-only staged reading of local playwright Dave Ebersole's gay comedy "Living Space." GayFest! will run from August 11-28, with performances seven days a week. The Shubin Theatre, 407 Bainbridge Street, Philadelphia. Tickets: www.quinceproductions.com
