NEXT STOP ART
by Richard Solash

Beneath the streets of Los Angeles, the metro whisks people away. Now, without even the cost of a token, you can experience a different type of underground movement. The Metropolitan Transit Authority is offering free guided tours of its art-filled stations. Sixty-two of them have been embellished thus far, making a museum out of formerly utilitarian space. Volunteer docents will help you navigate, introducing the artists on display and discussing their work. Of the world’s transit systems, L.A.’s is the only one to offer such an experience. It makes perfect sense in a city known for its traffic jams, as public transportation is now also a cultural draw. www.metro.net/art
