MODERNA MUSEET

Located on the island of Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm, the Moderna Museet is a world-class modern art museum that is celebrating its 50th birthday. Its massive collection of art spans over a century and features the work of Marcel Duchamp, Louise Bourgeois, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, and many more. Take some time to also enjoy the enormous Swedish and Nordic art collection that contains over 3,700 pieces. Swedes appreciate culture, and the collection continues to grow and evolve as a direct result of an increase in government funding for the procurement of local art. Wander around the grounds and look at some world-renowned sculptures, the most prominent of which is “The Four Elements” by Alexander Calder—it can be seen reaching for the sky from nearly a mile away. As the museum celebrates its first half-century, three gigantic collages by Barbara Kruger entitled “Between Being Born and Dying” will greet visitors at the entrance. Other upcoming exhibits include: Max Ernst “Dream and Revolution” through January 11, 2009, and “Time & Place: Los Angeles 1957–1968” through January 6, 2009. www.modernamuseet.se
