GAYBORHOOD
by Andrew Mersmann

This month sees the release of Greetings from the Gayborhood: A Nostalgic Look at Gay Neighborhoods by Don F. Reuter (Abrams Image). This small book is a longing look back to the time when gay neighborhoods were a sanctuary from the rest of society. It was the village our community created, where we could let our hair down. The book’s pages burst with images and memorabilia from bars, clubs, baths, shows, and shops that were the lynchpins of day-to-day life. Reuter painstakingly pored over the contents of GLBT history archives in each of twelve American cities to discover the particular flavor found in each location. It’s a fascinating collection of memories from those who were standing strong, and some who still are, even as so many of the rest of us have moved to the ‘burbs or up the avenue. www.abramsimage.com
