The Guggenheim Museum New York presents Catherine Opie: American Photographer. This unique exhibit brings together Opie’s most important works for the first time ever, giving a new life and perspective to her photographs. Rising to prominence with her Portraits series, Catherine Opie confronted viewers with challenging images of those who transpose gender. In the series Domestic, her social commentaries became especially evident when she traveled across the country and photographed lesbian households while they engaged in everyday activities. With exquisite color and intriguing subjects, her work is almost haunting. Her pieces challenged the zeitgeist of the 1990s and continue to challenge today’s traditional views of gender and sexuality. As threats continue against same-sex couples and transgender people, Opie’s insider look puts faces on those in question and allows people to stare into the subject’s eyes and connect on a deeper level. The exhibition runs now through January 7. www.guggenheim.org
