I am certain of nothing but the holiness of the heart's affections,
and the truth of imagination.

In the 2008 edition of Passport’s annual Swimwear issue, we celebrate same-sex love and affection. This may be considered a gratuitous “public display of affection” by some, or a “fashion faux pas” to others, but to us it is an essential part of our lives. Affection and
love nurture the body, mind, and spirit, providing us with the support we need to face the challenges that confront gay men and women in an often hostile world. Unfortunately, there are far too few places in the world where we can show our love for one another without fear of recrimination or violence. As a result of the ongoing homophobia that exists, same-sex affection is often something that can only be expressed behind closed doors, or in the privacy of our imagination. While we may still have a long way to go before we feel safe and secure in expressing our love for one another publicly, we must never waver in our commitment to achieve full and equal rights for gay men and lesbians everywhere.

In celebration of our love and our lives, we dedicate this issue of Passport to all the men and women around the world who have dedicated their lives to making sure that the dream of equal rights for gay people will soon become a reality.
