ANDREWMAKAY
Owner/Designer N2N Bodywear

If you’re at a dinner party and conversation with newly met friends turns to careers, you nod politely at the attorneys, accountants, and Wall Street traders, but if Andrew Makay is in the room you’re sure to be more interested. “I am a designer and owner of a company that makes sexy men’s underwear, swimwear, sportswear, and erotic wear. Depending on what cocktail party or what situation I’m in I do need to make it a little light when I talk about it,” says Makay.

Indeed, N2N Bodywear (www.n2n-bodywear.com) is all about making men look and feel good about themselves. Makay has known from early on that underwear and swimwear, especially if it isn’t knee-length board shorts, can both titillate and threaten. “It’s something I’ve grown up with; my dad is from Hungary so I had a quasi-European upbringing. I was raised on little bathing suits and little underwear—that was normal for me. Seeing Americans reacting to that in such an odd way was a shock. It’s what propelled me to do this and break down stereotypes. It is about how you feel.” Having a good dose of confidence and not giving a damn about what others think helps as well. Makay was raised in sometimes snooty Connecticut, where lacrosse and football rule the local papers, and wearing white after Labor Day can still cause a stir. “Growing up like that, it wasn’t awkward in the locker room, but it was at the beach. I always wore a little bikini because I thought it was hot. I was 16 and going into New York City taking dance class. I’d go into the village and shop for little hot bikinis for the beach that I’d bring back to Connecticut and wear…and I’d be ridiculed. But did that stop me? NO. I didn’t let that phase me. I ignored them and did what I wanted to do.”

Makay’s irreverence, self-deprecation, and quickness to laugh go a long way toward defining the N2N ethos. He’s not interested in fitting into any molds except the ones he sees as sexy and fulfilling, and for those who see it the same way, the door is always open. He is a maverick in intention and practice…for instance assuring all his manufacturing is done locally in Los Angeles, “I do not outsource. I know plenty of competitors that save lots of money that way, but I don’t believe in the whole outsourcing thing.”

His forward thinking ways extend be-yond the design boards, and the company extends itself in charitable endeavors as well. “I’m a member of the LA Frontrunners gay running group. N2N contributes to them and they raise money for other charities as well (AIDS Project Los Angeles Food Drive, Gay Lesbian Elder Housing, etc).

So too, his personal life doesn’t fit the image you might imagine of the hot underwear man. “In my personal life I bought a house and I love spending time there and having people come stay and visit. I’m a homebody and now I actually have a home. I’m growing up and the joy about getting older is you see what’s important. You think of all those years you wasted with what didn’t mean much but at the time you put so much emphasis on. Now I can sit back and chill and it comes into focus. I’m peaceful. I used to always think I was missing out on stuff every weekend…that things were going on without me. Now I can have dinner and decide to go home [early] and be happy. I can be in bed by 10:30, and I am SO OK with that.”

Maybe his home life is sedate, but if you’ve seen the N2N ad campaigns with TV’s hunky Aquaman, Alan Ritchson, you might guess Makay’s job is pretty brilliant, going to racy photo shoots with models all day long. “Oh my god I wish it was like that,” he exclaims. “The glamorous side with photo shoots and models, we have maybe three days of model calls and two days to shoot, and usually the shoot is very stressful. We need shots of every single item in every single color, and you’re on the clock, so there’s no time to sit back and enjoy the pretty models. The model call is always fun—who doesn’t like to have a hot guy come to your place of work and try on something hot so you can snap a shot of him…but its fleeting.”
