Passengers will not be allowed to board planes at Heathrow and Manchester airports if they do not submit to a full-body scan.
While not all passengers will have to go through the scanner, passengers that are asked, will be required to. Those who refuse, will not be allowed to board the plane.
Although opposition from civil liberties campaigners has been strong since the initial trial of the scanners two years ago, the advanced imaging technology has been ordered for Birmingham airport, followed by a nationwide roll-out.
Lord Adonis, the Transport Secretary assures passengers that the images will be deleted immediately after they are taken.
As far as health concerns, the TSA says that this technology is harmless; in fact, it gives off less radiation than talking on a cell phone. The radiation levels are only designed to pierce your clothing. While the radiation levels may be low, many doctors strongly agree that no radiation is the best and safest way to go. [DM]
