Goals for the New Year

Let's all work together and make 2010 a year of achievement, love, peace, and prosperity for everyone. To help make this happen, try to visualize and create a world that puts people first.

Here are some things we will be working toward this year:

1. Marriage Equality (it's about time)
2. Universal Healthcare (it's the right thing to do)
3. Affordable Housing (everyone deserves a safe and healthy home)
4. Full Employment (jobs help everyone)
5. Gay Rights Around the World (discrimination and hate must stop)
6. Clean Energy and Climate Protection (we must act now)
7. Election Reform (take the money out of politics)
8. Financial Regulations (take away the incentives for greed)
9. More Love Parades (just imagine this in Kabul, Bagdad, and Tehran)
10. Tell us what you would like to see happen in 2010.

Happy New year!

First Same-Sex Marriage Performed in Latin America

The first same-sex marriage in Argentina was performed today in Ushuaia. After a long battle in Buenos Aires with conservative judges who barred the two from marrying earlier this month, the couple then sought the legal right to marry in another province. The civil office in Ushuaia agreed to marry the two. Congrats to the couple who fought to make same-sex marriage possible in Latin America. [Clarin]

Mexico City Officials OK Same-Sex Marriage

Mexico City Gay Pride

Mexico City joins seven countries and five US sates in legalizing same-sex marriage. The assembly overwhelming voted, 39-20, to redefine the country's civil code's definition of marriage, redefining marriage from "between a man and a woman" to "the uniting of two people." Additionally, the legislation passed will allow married gay couples to legally adopt. Mexico City's Mayor Marcel Ebrard is expected to sign the bill into law. [Chron]

Coming Out During The Holidays

The ACLU has launched a website, as a part of its LGBT Rights Project, encouraging each of us to come out to family and friends during this holiday season. Tell 3: Coming Out is Not Enough gives hints about how to approach family and friends during this time of togetherness, some conversation starters, and a healthy dose of moral support for this moral imperative.

Opinion research shows that people are much more likely to support equality when they’ve had an opportunity to get to know what it really means for someone to be LGBT. The best way to help others understand what it’s like is through personal conversations. And no, you don’t have to be LGBT to have these conversations.

Some ways into the topic are suggested after the jump.

Colin Farrell Flies to Ireland for Gay Brother's Wedding

Irish hunk Colin Farrell will fy to Ireland to celebrate the marriage between his brother Eamon Farrell and his partner Steve Mannion. Same-Sex marriage is not legal in Ireland, but the two wanted to celebrate their union in Farrell's homeland. According to reports, they were legally married in Canada this summer.

"We have to get married abroad. It's absolutely terrible. We have to go somewhere legal, which narrows it down to about five countries," he said.

After a small ceremony, the party will continue at a popular nightspot in Dublin called Krystle nightclub. [IrishCentral]

Martha Stewart Features First Same-Sex Wedding

"The best part: They make no mention of our wedding being same-sex, or even of the milestone (which I do know was an active choice on their part, as part of their 15th anniv). We are simply included with two other opposite-gender couples, as part of the mix. As it should be," said Jeremy Hooper, a blogger whose ceremony is featured in the new issue of Martha Stewart's Weddings magazine. [TR] via [Goodasyou]
