
"On Tuesday night, a pair of firecrackers were thrown at a crowd of people on a street known for being a popular meeting place for gays and lesbians. Witnesses said four unidentified men ran away after the firecrackers exploded. According to police, the blasts left one injured, a man hit in the ear by a flying shard, and damaged a scooter. Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno said Wednesday that the attacks were ''extremely worrying'' and promised to beef up security in areas frequented by homosexuals." [ANSA.IT]
Other sources say that two people threw the small explosives on Gay St. (the newly named GLBT hangout in Rome). The two men are said to be between the ages of 25 and 30. One person was allegedly caught, but denied his involvement. [La Republica]
Update: The President of Arci Gay, Italy's main GLBT organization, hopes that the LGBT community will stand in unity against acts of homophobia and violence. Tonight at 10 P.M. a gathering will take place on San Giovanni in Laterano, or Gay Street. [RainNews 24]
