Back in June, LGBT-rights groups GetUp! and Australian Marriage Equality raised over AUS$31,000 to outbid business leaders in a tradition known as Mid-Winter Ball for the opportunity to dine with the Prime Minister of Australia Julia Gillard. Gillard has been vocal about her opposition to same-sex marriage and activists thought this was the perfect opportunity for her to come face-to-face with gay and lesbian families. At her official residency in Canberra, the couples used the opportunity to lobby the prime minister on gay marriage. From the AP:
Twelve-year-old Matthew Miller presented Gillard with flowers and two letters explaining why he and his brother Dylan, 9, would like their biological mother Sandy Miller to marry their other mother, Louise Bucke.
“Since they’re not allowed to get married, they’re basically being called not normal and we’re not known as a proper family,” Matthew told The Associated Press at Parliament House before the dinner, which the boys did not attend.
Along with Miller and Bucke, the other guests were Brisbane academic Sharon Dane, 54, who married Elaine Crump, 53, in Canada in a ceremony that is not recognized in Australia.
Unfortunately it appears that despite the conversation, the couples got the impression the Gillard’s position on same-sex marriage is “immovable.”

The 22-year-old star of Harry Potter and more recently The Woman in Black, Daniel Radcliffe, released a new PSA for the Trevor Project. In the PSA he discusses the importance of being a straight ally to the LGBT community. “I’m Daniel Radcliffe, and I believe that reaching out for help is the bravest thing a person can do,” Radcliffe says in the PSA. “If you are struggling and need support, call the Trevor Lifeline at 1-866-488-7386. It’s free and confidential, and trained counselors are there to listen 24/7 without judgment.”
“When we let someone know that we accept them for who they are and that we are safe to talk to, we can help save lives,” he said. “It’s as simple as that.”

Are you ready for this Sunday’s Academy Awards telecast? (I’d call it the gay Super Bowl but after Madonna’s halftime show and the Beckham underwear ads, this year’s actual Superbowl felt like a happy hour in Hells Kitchen.) Those with a theatrical bent and a love of camp can warm up for Hollywood’s big night with You Like Me: An Evening of Classic Acceptance Speeches at Ars Nova, February 25.
