Ellen DeGeneres Responds to JC Penney Controversy
Though the talk show host and comedienne Ellen DeGeneres normally shies away from “her haters,” the funny woman took some time out of her show yesterday to address the controversy surrounding her position as spokeswoman for JC Penney. A couple weeks ago a group called OneMillionMoms (a division of the American Family Association) called on JC Penney to remove DeGeneres as their spokeswoman simply because she is a lesbian and doesn’t “stand for traditional values.”
“They wanted to get me fired, and I’m proud and happy to say that JCPenney stuck by their decision to make me their spokesperson…Which is great news for me because I also need some new crew socks,” she told her audience to thunderous applause.
“I think Ellen is someone we all trust. She’s lovable, likable, honest and funny, but at her soul, we trust her,” JC Penney’s CEO Ron Johnson told the AP. [HP]
