Throw The Senators Out!
Although last week, New York State Senators voted against marriage equality, the Big Apple’s LGBT-rights movement has seen a powerful, re-energized campaign that demands gay and lesbian equality.
Using the mantra ‘If you can’t beat ‘em, get rid of ‘em,’ gay-rights advocates pledged Tuesday to run candidates against state senators who last week rejected a bill to legalize same-sex marriage.
The initiative began when Empire State Pride Agenda endorsed Queens Assemblyman Jose Peralta in his Democratic primary contest next year against Sen. Hiram Monserrate, D-Queens. The group said it will seek candidates (Democrats and Republicans) who support same-sex marriage.
“We are going to begin a very strategic and steady rollout over the course of the next months of candidates who we feel would make better state senators than the people currently sitting in the seats,” said Alan Van Capelle, the group’s executive director. [D&C]
