North Carolina Baptist Church Fights for Marriage Equality
Pullen Memorial Baptist Church in North Carolina has taken a new step in support of marriage equality. The church in Raleigh voted to prohibit their pastor, who is a lesbian, from legally marrying anyone until same-sex marriage is also legal. Marriage ceremonies can still be held there, but the pastor will no longer sign legally necessary marriage certificates for those couples.
“As people of faith, affirming the Christian teaching that before God all people are equal, we will no longer participate in this discrimination,” the church’s statement says.
The church was kicked out of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1992 after they decided to bless same-sex marriage.
