Mike Ruiz is “Pretty Masculine”
Last night, a well-polished crowd arrived at the Red Bull Space to celebrate photographer Mike Ruiz’s release of his new book “Pretty Masculine.” Ruiz, who was with his fiance Martin Berusch, posed for pictures with oh-my-god-hot models, signed books, and chatted with guests sipping Me Oko vodka drinks in the intimate, yet lively party. A screen flashed images from the book that demonstrates Ruiz’s unique ability to capture the ideal male in drop-to-your-knees poses that seem both personal and playful. Ruiz writes of the book: “Pretty Masculine” is the apogee of my latest effort to capture humanity out of context. It is the culmination of my desire to incorporate my hyper-stylized and fantasy-driven style of photography and reinterpret the male ideal from a new perspective. It has been my intention to open a forum of sorts and, in so doing, inspire thought and dialogue with respect to finding alternative ways of looking at the world around us. In this case, to look at masculinity beyond what might be considered the stereotypical man.”
Probably the most heart-warming part of the evening was Ruiz’s decision to include the Gay Men’s Health Crisis in his publishing endeavor. A portion of the proceeds of books sold go to help out the world’s oldest HIV/AIDS organization. Click here to purchase your copy.
