Barilla CEO Issues Apology but is it Enough?
It’s been one hell of a year. We’ve seen it all—both good and bad. And for this week, we’re reminding you of some of the defining moments of 2013.
By now, you’re probably aware of last week’s pastagate when Chairman Guido Barilla not only insulted the gay community, but also women with remarks claiming that Barilla will only ever use traditional families—”the classic family”—in ads. After releasing a statement that fell on deaf ears, Guido made an apology video. “Yesterday I apologized for offending many people around the world. Today I am repeating that apology,” he says to the camera. “Through my entire life, I’ve always respected every person that I’ve met including gays and their families, without any distinction. I’ve never discriminated against anyone. I have heard the countless reactions around the world to my words, which have depressed and saddened me. It is clear that I have a lot to learn about the lively debate concerning the evolution of the family. In the coming weeks, I pledge to meet representatives of the groups that best represent the evolution of the family, including those who have been offended by my words.”
