In a recent interview, Cher revealed that she was asked to visit Russia for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, but she declined the invitation due to Russia’s anti-gay propaganda laws. “I can’t name names, but my friend called who is a big oligarch over there and asked me if I’d like to be an ambassador for the Olympics and open the show,” she said. “I immediately said no. I want to know why all of this gay hate just exploded over there. He said the Russian people don’t feel the way the government does.” Cher is yet another celebrity who has declined an invitation to the country. Prison Break–star Wentworth Miller turned down a visit to a film festival prompting the actor to come out.
