ArtsUnited is holding their second annual United & Proud exhibition, which is running from now to July 6 at the Pride Center in Wilton Manors. ArtsUnited focuses on promoting LGBT art and culture through various means including art shows, book signings, educational seminars, outreach programs and other events that draw attention to the artistic members of the LGBT community. Although ArtsUnited prides itself on supporting the LGBT community, it is determined to let the art be appreciated for what it is, not for the artist’s sexual orientation.  “The second issue is does [identifying as a gay artist] help or hurt your career. In putting shows together, I have met resistance from artists that didn’t want to be labeled as ‘gay.’ They wanted their art to stand on its own, which I agree with,” says Peter Meyerhoefer, President of ArtsUnited. “But there are collectors whose art collection is based on supporting LGBT artists. Just like a collector may only collect photographs or work by street artists or by Cuban artists.” For that reason, non-LGBT artists and audiences are welcome to watch, contribute to the art, or even volunteer to help this artistic community grow.
