BRAZIL
RIO DE JANEIRO
With cinematic gatherings all over the world, the Rio International Film Festival really is a step up from the rest of the competition. The festival features over 400 films from 50 countries, shown at over 200 venues throughout the city. Just like the city’s fashion weeks that continue to explode on the world stage, the film festival is the center of international attention, even making waves in the Hollywood scene. Schedule your red carpet getaway from September 21–August 8. www.festivaldorio.com.br

SÃO PAULO
With all the excessively long Hollywood blockbuster productions these days, it is nice to see this film festival embracing shorter works of art. Short film, like short writing, can pack the same kind of punch as longer pieces.

It is about saying as much as you can as succinctly as possible. The Festival Internacional de Curtas-Metragens celebrates those smaller works from August 20–28. Expect nearly 400 films from over 54 countries, making this a truly international event. www.kinoforum.org

CURAÇAO
Every year throngs of gays and lesbians flock to the island for a little rest and relaxation, OK, and partying too, for Get Wet Weekend. From September 24–27, the island celebrates with wonderful events for GLBT travelers. Enjoy parties, including the famous NaviGAYtion party, movie nights, performances, and of course the beautiful beaches. Most of all, take time to savor the wonderful atmosphere this island has to offer, Biba I laga biba (Live and let live). www.gaycuracao.com

PERU
LIMA
Each and every August 30th, the citizens of Lima honor Santa Rosa de Lima (Saint Rose of Lima), the patron saint of Peru. The 17th-century woman, whose real name was Isabel Flores de Oliva, devoted her life to tending to the ill. Although she was a devout laywoman, Santa Rosa belonged to no specific religious order. Pilgrims come to the city to throw personal letters and wishes into a special wishing well and visit the hermitage that Santa Rosa built. www.peru.info/perueng.asp
